Newswise — Grand Rapids, Michigan, August 15, 2012 – Anesthesiologists across the nation appear to be responding to several key shortage factors that are influencing their acceptance of alternative antiemetic non-drug methods. Pressure Point Inc., an early growth healthcare company with a growing customer base, is experiencing significant clinical interest for its popular stay-enhanced (Pressure Right®) 72 hour (Rx) antiemetic (non-drug) acupressure disposable wrist strip from anesthesiologists associated with major hospitals and surgery centers across the country. As a result of this latest trend, it seems that several key factors are prompting anesthesiologists to consider other non-drug antiemetic methods, such as our Pressure Right® 72 hour antiemetic (non-drug) medical device.

Examples of these factors influencing anesthesiologists include the unavailability of antiemetic (anti-nausea) medications, such as Ondansetron and Dexamethasone injectables among others, to using oral tablets and solutions by mouth administration, to the growing demand for generic antiemetic injectables for oncology patients experiencing chemo-induced nausea and vomiting, and fewer companies making generic antiemetic injectable drugs because of very small profit margins. All these factors are potential systemic healthcare problems contributing to less antiemetic effective care and unintended postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) complications for surgery patients.

As a new FDA cleared disposable prescription-based antiemetic device, Pressure Right® provides a low-cost enhanced, non-drug antiemetic administration, which uses acupressure to block the transmission of emetic symptoms for up to 72 hours following surgery. The Pressure Right® effect provides improved antiemetic benefits in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), which still remains a long-standing problem for anesthesia practitioners. Although the placement of Pressure Right® begins prior to the induction of anesthesia, the patient can wear the wrist strips for up to 72 hours following surgery for extended antiemetic relief.

The Pressure Right® acustimulation effect can also provide the added prophylactic effect of preventing and/or reducing the delayed effects of postdischarge nausea and vomiting (PDNV) after ambulatory surgery. Pressure Right® can clinically interact with any class of antiemetic medication to inhibit the effects of PONV and delayed PDNV. There are no contraindications or any adverse side effects, including no potential tourniquet effect when administering Pressure Right® to patients for up to 72 hours of antiemetic relief. As a replacement for antiemetic injectables, anesthesiologists are trying the use of oral administration of tablets and solutions to take by mouth for the prevention/treatment of PONV/PDNV in adult patients. However, anesthesiologists recognize that oral administration of antiemetic drugs is not the most desirable mechanism to treat nausea and vomiting and can promote increased PONV complications in surgery patients.

The usual drug-based methodology for treating PONV/PDNV has been disrupted as a result of the acute drug shortages, which has now developed into a new set of problems for anesthesiologists to explore and solve on their own.

The initiatives being undertaken by anesthesiologists suggests that they are seeking viable alternatives to the drug shortage, so that patients will be afforded the best available antiemetic approach in PONV prophylaxis. Among the alternatives to antiemetic drugs, has been the utilization of acupressure to the P6 pressure point. The stimulation effect on the P6 pressure point has been clinically proven to produce an antiemetic effect that blocks the transmission of nausea.

Our Pressure Right® (Rx) acupressure antiemetic wrist strip is the first of its kind to use P6 acupressure technology to promote 72 hours of PONV prophylaxis. Its non-drug preoperative implementation technique allows surgical patients to experience optimal PONV management following surgery. Overall, patients generally achieve improved patient satisfaction results with the administration of Pressure Right®.

The current production capacity of Pressure Right® by its manufacturer, Laminin Medical Products, is that they can produce and package 1.5 million units per year. In addition, Laminin is prepared to meet whatever the demand for Pressure Right® may increase to with enhancements to their current production capabilities.
