The announcement of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, has heightened concern over the spread of the disease in this country. Is the fear and anxiety generated by news developments in reasonable proportion to the threat? Is the media handling communication on this subject constructively – or causing alarm? What is the media doing well in reporting on the epidemic? What should they be doing to serve the public good?
