Newswise — December 18, 2012 – Neptune, NJ – Jersey Shore University Medical Center is proud to welcome Joaquin Santolaya, M.D., Ph.D., to the Perinatal Institute. Dr. Santolaya has an extensive background in perinatology, as well as clinical genetics. These unique sub-specialties give Dr. Santolaya the ability to screen, counsel, diagnose and treat high-risk obstetrics patients before, during and after pregnancy – providing further support to patients on both a physical and emotional level.
Dr. Santolaya has vast research experience in reproductive sciences, including investigating new antenatal treatments for genetic conditions using stem-cells. He is a frequent presenter at international, national and local conferences, and has received many honors and awards, such as being an elected member of the Academy of Science in Europe. Dr. Santolaya maintains involvement with prestigious professional organizations, including ACOG, Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, American College of Medical Genetics, American Institute of Ultrasound and Medicine, and the International Fetal Medical and Surgical Society. Dr. Santolaya also serves as professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at UMDMJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and as an adjunct professor of genetics at Rutgers University, both in New Jersey.
Dr. Santolaya completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Universidad Autónoma of Madrid (UAM), Spain. After receiving a Ph.D. in fetal physiology at the University of London (UK) and UAM, Dr. Santolaya relocated to the United States in 1989 and completed fellowships at Eastern Virginia Medical School, VA, the University of Illinois at Chicago, IL, and Yale University, CT.
Jersey Shore University Medical Center is home to the Perinatal Institute (PNI), where specialized experts provide 24-hour care for complex pregnancies. The multi-disciplinary team consists of physicians who are board certified in obstetrics/gynecology and in maternal fetal medicine and now also in medical genetics. In addition to office consultations, the physicians of the Perinatal Institute offer advanced diagnostics such as high-definition ultrasounds and genetic screenings to help pinpoint and prepare for any complications. Other services include prenatal care, genetic counseling, prenatal screening and diagnosis, chorionic villous sampling, amniocentesis, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling and other ultrasound-guided procedures used for the management of fetuses with treatable abnormalities.
