Philadelphia, PA, August 8, 2001 -- Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) today announced that it has licensed access to LWWoncology.com, (www.LWWoncology.com), its Internet community for oncology professionals, to the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University.

These licenses will provide more than 9,200 medical professionals and researchers at these leading institutions with online access to the comprehensive, content-focused website. The site currently features the full text of five best-selling oncology texts, with monthly updates to ensure access to the latest oncology information. The site also includes video clips, a cancer drug database, and a powerful search engine that distinguishes between significant discussions of a topic and insignificant mentions to produce fast, accurate results. The site's bookmark organizer lets users create a custom, online "virtual textbook" with content of their choice selected from all texts available. Once selected, users can revisit their bookmarks, and add or delete content at their discretion.

In addition to these site licenses, LWWoncology.com has licensed its content to 12 other institutions, including major cancer centers and research institutions, bringing the total number of potential users to 13,000. More than 45 leading institutions have access to the site on a trial basis, while 3,000 individuals have signed up for paid or trial subscriptions.

"It's an excellent reference tool that provides easy access to a great amount of information," said Chung Sook Kim, Associate Director of Digital Library Services at Johns Hopkins. "The site provides the ability to store searches, which is useful, as is the bookmark feature."

"We are pleased to offer such important institutions access to this new source of cancer information," said Jonathon Pine, Senior Executive Editor. "With key oncology texts online, these users will have expanded access to authoritative clinical information that can aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer."

LWWoncology.com currently features the full text of the world-renowned Cancer: Principles & Practice of Oncology, 6th edition, Diseases of the Breast, 2nd edition, The American Joint Committee on Cancer's Cancer Staging Manual, 5th edition, The Manual of Clinical Oncology, 4th edition, and the newly added Cancer Chemotherapy & Biotherapy: Principles and Practice, 3rd edition.

Additional content coming later in 2001 includes The Cancer Chemotherapy Source Book, 3rd edition and Principles & Practice of the Biologic Therapy of Cancer, 3rd edition. By the end of 2002, there will be 18 oncology texts available on the website.

LWWoncology.com is a subscription website, with discounted prices offered to purchasers of the 6th edition of Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology. Online-only subscriptions also are available, along with institutional subscriptions for multiple concurrent users. For more information or to subscribe, visit www.LWWoncology.com.

Launched in December 2000, LWWoncology.com was the company's first entry into comprehensive web-based portals for medical professionals, and is an outgrowth of parent company Wolters Kluwer's strategic directive to develop sites for professionals and accelerate migration to the Internet.
