Educational Session Covers Test Methods, Techniques, and Best Practices When Assessing Male Infertility

WHAT

To shed light on the facets of male infertility and the role pathologists play in its diagnosis and treatment, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) will host an educational session at its annual meeting on the topic. Experts will explore reproductive-related laboratory test methods and techniques, as well as the limitation of such tests and ways to improve test performance in clinical laboratories. The session will also focus on how test results influence patient care and management, and advances in assisted reproductive technologies.

WHY

According to the American Urological Association, infertility can affect 15 percent of couples. In nearly half of these couples, the inability to conceive may be due to male infertility. Not only do pathologists play a key role in identifying the issue, but oftentimes they help to determine viable assisted reproductive technologies. This session provides information that will help pathologists better diagnose infertility and enhance clinicians’ recommendations for treatment options.

WHO

The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving more than 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. As diagnostic physicians, pathologists play a key role in diagnosing a number of health issues, including male infertility.

The “Assessing the Many Facets of Male Infertility” session includes these experts:

• Patricia A. Devine, MD, FCAP of Sound Shore Medical Center (New Rochelle, N.Y.)

• Erica J. Behnke, PhD, HCLD of Kettering Reproductive Medicine (Kettering, Ohio)
