WHAT
Molecular testing is a growing aspect of medicine and is the foundation of personalized health care. Pathologists perform and interpret these genetic tests, serving as vital contributors to the patient’s health care team. At its annual meeting, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) will host an educational session titled “Comprehending the Critical Role of Biospecimens in Personalized Health Care.” At the session, experts will describe the rationale for creating high-quality biospecimens, what constitutes a high-quality biospecimen, and how pathologists are applying these concepts.
WHY
High-quality biospecimens, samples such as tissue or blood used for diagnosis, are essential to the advancement of molecular testing, and pathologists are using cutting edge technologies to help improve diagnostics of biospecimens. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) testing technologies will be covered within the CAP’s educational session.
WHO
The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving more than 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. As diagnostic physicians, pathologists play a key role in the use of biospecimens in molecular testing.
The “Comprehending the Critical Role of Biospecimens in Personalized Health Care” session includes the following experts:
Carolyn C. Compton, MD, PhD, FCAP (Washington, D.C.)
- National Cancer Institute, Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research
David G. Hicks, MD, FCAP (Rochester, N.Y.)
-University of Rochester Medical Center
