Risks of CVD for COX-2 Inhibitors Lower than Previously Reported
Florida Atlantic University

Selective COX-2 inhibitors were believed to cause large cardiovascular disease risks (CVD), including heart attacks, strokes and deaths. Florida Atlantic University researcher Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., renowned for his work in the treatment and prevention of CVD, most notably low-dose aspirin, examines the totality of evidence, including strengths and limitations of different types of data about CVD and COX-2 inhibitors and NSAIDs. Hennekens and his colleague conclude that the risks of COX-2 inhibitors (e.g. Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra) are lower than previously suggested and no greater than most traditional NSAIDs.
