Lotto Things to Think About

A state-run lottery isn't likely to create gambling addicts, says UAB addiction counselor Steve Moore, but it should bring more people into treatment for compulsive gambling disorders. "Studies show that when legalized gambling comes to an area, the number of people seeking treatment doubles," says Moore. "It's not that there are more addicts, but there are more people willing to admit they have a problem and seek help, particularly if they can blame the government for their predicament." Moore says that compulsive behaviors such as gambling or sexual addictions are often seen in conjunction with chemical dependencies. And gambling addiction is the hardest compulsive behavior to treat.
