WHAT: More than 5700 University of Maryland students are expected to receive bachelor and advanced degrees during the main commencement ceremony, Thursday, May 22, at the Comcast Center. 4284 undergraduates, 1265 master's degree candidates and 213 PhDs are expected to receive degrees.

The main commencement's featured speaker will be Fannie Mae Chairman and CEO Franklin Raines. His topic is diversity and affirmative action on campus. He will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Public Service during the ceremony.

The university will also confer an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Leonard Slatkin, the internationally known music director of the National Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin will be the featured speaker at the School of Music's graduation ceremony at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, May 23 at 3 p.m.

WHEN: Main commencement ceremonies begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22.Individual schools and departments will hold their own ceremonies Friday, May 23 at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m.

MEDIA: Parking for the media is free on all surface lots and in adjacent parking garages. Risers and a mult box will be available. Members of the media should enter on the ground floor.
