Newswise — The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR), the leading voice on research into the biological sex differences between women and men, is proud to announce that Dr. Larry Cahill, professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California-Irvine, will be giving the Keynote Remarks on “Sex Differences in the Brain” at this year’s SWHR Gala.

In addition, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Steven Shak, executive vice president of research and development at Genomic Health, will highlight the transformative impact of genomics in cancer treatment and kick off SWHR’s yearlong public awareness campaign focused on “Transforming Science: Innovations in Molecular Diagnostics.” More details at SWHR.org.

Dr. Cahill has been actively engaged with SWHR on research into sex differences in the brain. He was recently featured on CBS 60 Minutes for his expertise. While at UC Irvine, he has made important discoveries about sex influences on emotional memory. He is a longtime leader in the area of brain and memory, and has become one of the most influential leaders on the topic of sex influences on the brain.

Dr. Shak has been a leader in personalized medicine for more than two decades. Under his leadership, Genomic Health used innovative molecular diagnostic methods and rigorous clinical studies to develop breast cancer and colon cancer assays. Previously, Dr. Shak led the clinical team at Genentech, Inc., that gained approval for Herceptin®, a targeted biologic treatment for breast cancer.

The Annual SWHR Gala will be held on Wednesday, April 2, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. This year’s event marks the launch of SWHR’s public initiatives in the exciting field of molecular diagnostics and its powerful impact on women’s health. During the gala, SWHR will play an 8 ½-minute video highlighting the latest innovations in this breakthrough technology on coronary artery disease, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, and mental health. The video will be the cornerstone of a national public education campaign emphasizing the importance of molecular diagnostics in better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

“For nearly 25 years, the Society for Women’s Health Research has been the leader in advocating for greater understanding into how diseases and conditions affect women and men differently. We are pleased and grateful to have such outstanding experts join us to give their insights at this year’s gala,” said Phyllis Greenberger, SWHR president and CEO. “This event marks the launch of our focus on molecular diagnostics and their impact on women’s health. We will highlight these advances as part of a public education campaign and at a series of events before the medical community, health care advocates, innovators and investors, and policymakers in Congress and the federal government.”
