Monkeypox Experts Available at NYU Medical Center

Infectious Disease experts at NYU Medical Center are available to speak about the current monkeypox outbreak in the United States.

"We've always been within the possibilities of something like this occurring," said Dr. Neal Steigbigel, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the Division of Infectious Diseases at New York University School of Medicine. "This is due to zoonosis, an infection that normally is endemic in animal life but has potential for spreading to humans."

In addition to Dr. Steigbigel, Martin Blaser, M.D. Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Joel Ernst, M.D., Director of Infectious Disease at NYU Medical Center are also available for comment regarding monkeypox.

Dr. Steigbigel adds, "The exact route of infection is probably by touch. However, there is a suspicion that monkeypox could be spread from the upper respiratory tract of infected animals to humans."
