Newswise — Miroslav Djordjevic, MD, PhD, an internationally renowned surgeon and a world authority on surgery for transgender individuals, has joined the Mount Sinai Health System as a urogenital reconstructive surgeon at Mount Sinai’s Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS) and a Professor of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Djordjevic join the CTMS and Department of Urology,” said David Reich, MD, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital. “With his world-leading expertise in urologic reconstruction and extensive research in this area, Dr. Djordjevic will help to train the next generation of physicians in transgender health care.”

Dr. Djordjevic joins Mount Sinai from the Belgrade Center for Genital Reconstructive Surgery in Serbia. He is one of the few urologists in the world whose scope of expertise encompasses treatment of all anomalies of the genital system regardless of sex or age. He graduated from Belgrade University’s School of Medicine and did his residency and fellowship training there. Dr. Djordjevic has been an invited lecturer and visiting professor at universities throughout the world. He is also the founder and leader of the Belgrade Center for Genital Reconstructive Surgery, a fellowship program that selects 20-30 international colleagues every year.

“The addition of Dr. Djordjevic to CTMS expands both our capacity and expertise for genital surgeries,” said Joshua Safer, MD, Executive Director of Mount Sinai’s Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery.  “His specific expertise in trans masculine genital surgery will serve as a major advantage for the Mount Sinai trans care program.”

Dr. Djordjevic is President of the Society for Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons and is a member of other urological and surgical associations, including the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, the American Urological Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has also received numerous research awards and honors, including awards given by the European Association of Urology, the German Urological Association, and the European Society for Sexual Medicine.

“It is a great honor to be joining the CTMS, which is one of the leading centers for transgender medicine in the world,” said Dr. Djordjevic. “I am truly looking forward to working together with the talented and experienced Mount Sinai staff of medical experts to improve our skills and continue to make the lives of people in the trans community better.”

The CTMS is the first comprehensive center of its kind in New York—and one of a few pioneers nationwide—to provide transgender patients with a multidisciplinary, integrated system of care. According to Dr. Safer, CTMS serves a growing need to support patients in New York City through each stage of their journey, from initial assessment and screening to hormonal therapy, surgery, and post-transition care, providing seamless access to affordable care.  Patients can see specialists in areas of care such as pediatrics, endocrinology, mental health, gynecology, primary care, urology, plastic surgery, ear, nose, and throat, and infectious disease, all at one location.

Since the Center’s opening in the beginning of 2016, its accomplishments include:

  • Approximately 1,200 surgeries have been performed, including gender reassignment, hysterectomy, and orchiectomy.
  • Approximately 2,000 trans patients have been treated and cared for.
  • Most insurance plans are accepted including Medicaid.
  • Ten full-time surgeons are on staff with expertise in plastic surgery, genitourinary surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology.
  • An online continuing education transgender course is offered for professionals in the field through the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. To learn more go to https://www.coursera.org/learn/transgender-medicine/home/welcome
  • There are no wait lists for genital surgeries.
  • In 2017, CTMS became the first center in New York to offer a transgender surgery fellowship to fill a void in training programs for physicians looking to provide gender-affirming care.
