Newswise — Scott & White Healthcare-Round Rock, a part of Baylor Scott & White Health, has opened a comprehensive Neuro-oncology clinic to serve patients in the Central Texas community. Patients will benefit from access to a range of services that include neurosurgery, radiation oncology, and neuro-oncology as well as chemotherapy/infusion services without having to make several appointments on different days. The clinic is located at 425 University Blvd in Round Rock on the 4th floor. One type of brain tumor treated by the team is a glioblastoma, which is a tumor that arises from astrocytes—the star-shaped cells that make up the “glue-like” or supportive tissue of the brain. These tumors are often highly malignant (cancerous) because the cells reproduce quickly and they are supported by a large network of blood vessels. Glioblastomas are generally found in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain, but can be found anywhere in the brain or spinal cord. Because a large number of these cancer cells, nourished by an ample blood supply, are reproducing at any given time, quick integrative treatment across multiple specialties can be beneficial for patients with these types of tumors.

“If we find an abnormality on a patient’s MRI or CT of the brain, we can get the patient in to see not only myself, but a neurosurgeon without them having to wait and make separate appointments on another day,” said Ekokobe Fonkem, D.O., Neuro-Oncologist at Baylor Scott & White. “We’re excited to continue to offer these services to patients in our Central Texas community."

Patients will need a referral. For more information or to make an appointment, call 254-724-2475.
