Joel Maxcy, an associate professor at Temple’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management and member of the university’s Sport Industry Research Center, is a sports economist specializing in labor issues and is available for comment on the NHL lockout. Dr. Maxcy sees the NHL situation as very similar to last year’s NBA lockout in that both represent a continuation of lockout practices by professional leagues where labor is forced into fairly significant concessions. “We now have a situation where, because they are organized as labor unions, antitrust law is out of the picture and players are giving back the ground they gained,” he said.
