BUSINESS TIPS FROM THE UAB OFFICE OF MEDIA RELATIONS

No Ethical Choice

You may think you work for an ethical company, but your perceptions may be based solely on how well they treat you. Popular books like "The Hundred Best Companies in America" suggest it's possible to know how ethical a given company is, but Susan Key, Ph.D., UAB assistant professor of management, contends no research truly reflects a company's "ethical culture." Instead, research shows that satisfied workers tend to describe their companies as ethical while dissatisfied employees give their companies bad marks. "Organizations cannot be easily categorized into simplistic classifications such as ethical or unethical despite popular beliefs or academic attempts to create such categories. How you treat employees may be critical in their estimation of the ethics of an organization, and this perception may guide their behavior."
