The New York University College of Dentistry, in conjunction with the New York County Dental Society and the American Dental Association (ADA), are joining forces on a volunteer initiative to "Give Kids a Smile" by providing free educational, preventive, and restorative services to children, from February 18-21, 2003. The services are part of a larger nation-wide initiative to raise awareness and access to dental care for all children. Across the country, dental schools, dental societies and thousands of private dentists will participate in a one-day "Give Kids a Smile" program sponsored by the ADA on February 21, 2003.

"Proper dental care combined with brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste can help children avoid cavities completely," notes Dr. Neal G. Herman, clinical professor of pediatric dentistry at the NYU College of Dentistry. "Unfortunately, many children from poor and immigrant families do not get the care they need. In fact, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research reports that 80 percent of cavities in the United States are concentrated in a subgroup of fewer than 25 percent of children. The 'Give Kids a Smile Program' provides an excellent opportunity for the dental community to help increase access to care."
