Newswise — The president of Fairleigh Dickinson University, Dr. J. Michael Adams, announced today the University has developed a comprehensive program to assist college students displaced by the Gulf Coast hurricane disaster.
Traditional courses on both New Jersey campuses of the University as well as on-line offerings are available to these students. Counselors are prepared to work with the students to align courses with their current major. These students are eligible for awards of up to 50 percent off the University's posted tuition rate.
"As an independent university with a public mission, we want to do what we can to help minimize the impact of Katrina on the local communities we serve," Adams said. "With two campuses in New Jersey we are in a position to offer real help to students who have had their educational plans thwarted. In addition to the variety of academic programs and formats, housing is available on FDU's Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck."
Gulf Coast college students, whose schools have closed due to the disaster, are encouraged to speak with special counselors who will be in place beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6. While the University is focusing its efforts on New Jersey residents, students from other parts of the country who have been impacted by Katrina are equally welcome to attend the university. The admissions professionals who will be manning the phone will help students select the right FDU campus and schedule of courses to meet their needs. The counselors will be available at 1-800-338-8803.
"Like other universities around the country," said Adams, "Fairleigh Dickinson University has received inquiries from Gulf Coast college students and their parents and has moved to provide assistance. It is important to reach out to these students as quickly as possible and put a viable plan in place."
Recognizing the role that first responders play in a natural disaster of this magnitude, the University is prepared to offer these volunteers discounted tuition for the Spring 2006 semester.
Fairleigh Dickinson University has two campuses in New Jersey, the Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck and the College at Florham in Madison. As New Jersey's largest private university, Fairleigh Dickinson offers more than 100 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs to more than 11,000 students.
