EDUCATION TIP FROM UAB OFFICE OF MEDIA RELATIONS
Picking the Right Preschool
Selecting the right early learning environment is an important step in preparing a child for elementary school, say Drs. Sharon and Craig Ramey, UAB developmental psychologists and authors of a new book, "Going to School -- How to Help Your Child Succeed." The Rameys say quality preschools offer more than just safe, responsible care and nurturing. The Rameys advise parents to look for low child-to-teacher ratios; teachers who are responsive and encouraging; strong programs that build fundamental learning, social and emotional skills; an open-door policy for visiting parents; daily progress reports to parents; regularly inspected facilities that are safe and clean; cheerful surroundings; and quiet areas for sleep and rest.
