Hofstra's President Presides Over His 25th and Final Commencement

Speakers include Fr. Tom Hartman, Actress Susan Sullivan,A Nobel Laureate, A Chief Judge, Among Others --

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY, HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Hofstra University, located in Hempstead, Long Island, is preparing for graduation festivities scheduled for the end of May. The largest class to date, more than 1,800 undergraduate and graduate will celebrate commencement on Sunday, May 20 and Monday, May 21, 2001.

Sunday, May 20, 11:30 a.m.: Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the Hofstra Arena

Hon. Joseph M. Margiotta, attorney and former legislator. Hofstra alumnus, Joseph M. Margiotta, is senior partner of the Uniondale law firm of Margiotta & Ricigliano. He is a former assemblyman and chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee. He is a former member of the Hofstra University Board of Trustees and past President and Board Chairman of the University's Alumni Association. He is president of the Hofstra University Pride Club and the Dante Organization; a board member of Christa House, co-chairman of the American Committee on Italian Migration and a statewide trustee of the Order Sons of Italy in America.

Dr. Gerardus 't Hooft, Dutch Physicist and Nobel Laureate. Gerardus 't Hooft is a Dutch physicist and Nobel laureate, known for his contributions to the development of particle physics. In 1999 Dr. 't Hooft shared the Nobel Prize in physics in recognition of his research in the area of "electroweak" interaction, one of the fundamental forces that holds matter together. He and his partner, Martinus J. G. Veltman, while investigating new theories for the interactions between elementary particles, called "gauge theories," discovered how to calculate with extreme accuracy the properties of these particles. One of their crucial calculation techniques is known as dimensional regularization.

Walter B. Kissinger, Managing Director, Topspin. Walter B. Kissinger is managing director of Topspin, a newly formed venture capital firm. He had a 20-year career as chief executive officer, chairman and president of The Allen Group (NYSE), a worldwide manufacturer of automotive test and service equipment. Previously, as president and chief operating officer, he played a key role in building two publicly listed companies. Mr. Kissinger is founder and former chairman of the Long Island Research Institute. He is also a Trustee Emeritus of Hofstra University, having served as Vice Chairman of the Board. Mr. Kissinger is listed in Who's Who in America.

Dr. Sharon M. Oster, Management Specialist, Consultant and Professor. Sharon M. Oster is a highly renowned management specialist and consultant, with expertise in competitive strategy, microeconomic theory, industrial organization, the economics of regulation and antitrust, and nonprofit strategy. . Dr. Oster is currently the Frederic D. Wolfe Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at Yale University, where she has been recognized as an exemplary mentor dedicated to helping her students achieve their goals. Among other honors Dr. Oster received the 1999 Hofstra Alumni Achievement Award, and was named best instructor at Yale School of Management in a 1994 Business Week survey of business schools.

Dr. Jonathan Fanton, President, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Jonathan F. Fanton became president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation on September 1, 1999. With assets of almost $4.2 billion, MacArthur is one of the nation's 10 largest foundations. It makes grants in the United States and abroad totaling more than $170 million annually, with emphasis on human and community development, education, the environment, population issues, international security, human rights, creativity and media. Previously, he had been president of the New School for Social Research (now known as New School University) in New York City for 17 years. Dr. Fanton is chair of Human Rights Watch, the largest U.S.-based human rights organization, which operates in 70 countries. He is co-chair of the International Committee for Academic Freedom.

Monday, May 21, 10 a.m.: School of Communication at the Hofstra Arena

Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman, Religious Leader and President/CEO of Telecare. The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman, also know as Father Tom, is president and C.E.O. of the Diocese of Rockville Centre's television station, Telecare. Father Tom has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, including Imus in the Morning, CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, MSNBC's The News with Brian Williams and his own Telecare productions. He also has a national radio program, Journeys Through Rock, which reaches hundreds of stations on the ABC Radio network. Among others, he is the co-author of How do you Spell God? Answers to the Big Questions From Around the World (with a forward by the Dalai Lama), which was made into an HBO animated special and also won the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award. In memory of his late brother, he helped establish Christa House: The Jerry Hartman Residence, a not-for-profit home for the dying poor, particularly those who are living with end-stage AIDS located in West Babylon on Long Island.

Susan M. Sullivan, Actress. Susan M. Sullivan is an Emmy-nominated actress who attended Hofstra University on a drama scholarship. Since the early 1970s, she has starred in such television programs as Another World, Julie Farr, M.D. and Falcon Crest. Additionally she has appeared in many miniseries, telefilms and PBS programs. She was a longtime spokesperson for Tylenol. Her current role as Kitty on the hit television series Dharma & Greg earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination. Ms. Sullivan also received Emmy nominations for her performances in Rich Man, Poor Man -- Book II and Julie Farr, M.D. Her movie credits include the independent films Show and Tell and Puzzled, as well as My Best Friend's Wedding.

Monday, May 21, 2 p.m.: New College at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse

Dr. Bruce W. Stillman, Director and Chief Executive Officer, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Bruce W. Stillman is director and chief executive officer of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a private, nonprofit research and educational institution with research programs focusing on cancer, neurobiology and plant genetics. Dr. Stillman's primary research interest is DNA replication, the process by which DNA is duplicated prior to cell division.

Monday, May 21, 2001, 7 p.m., School of Law at the Hofstra University Arena

Hon. Judith S. Kaye, Chief Judge, State of New York and Court of Appeals of the State of New York. Chief Judge Kaye was appointed chief judge by former New York State Governor Mario M. Cuomo and was confirmed by the state Senate in March 1993. She was the first woman both to serve on the Court of Appeals and to occupy the state Judiciary's highest office. Currently, Chief Judge Kaye is chair of the Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children, a trustee of Barnard College, a member of the board of editors of the New York State Bar Journal, and a member of both the American Law Institute and the American College of Trial Lawyers. She is a founding member and honorary chair of Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert, an organization of legal professionals that brings information to the community-at-large concerning early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
