Pulitzer Prize Winner to Speak at NC State Commencement

The Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist William Raspberry will deliver the North Carolina State University commencement address on Saturday, May 18, at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh. He will also receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from NC State.

Raspberry won his Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary in 1994. His syndicated column appears in 225 newspapers. He has won numerous other journalistic awards and wrote the 1991 book, "Looking Backward at Us."

He is also the Knight Professor of the Practice of Communication and Journalism at the Dewitt Wallace Center and the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University, and was a featured speaker at the 2001 Emerging Issues Forum.

Dr. James P. Comer - Comer is the Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine's Child Study Center. He has been on the Yale faculty since 1968. He is a founder and director of the Child Study Center's Comer School of Development Project and associate dean of the Yale Medical School. He founded a development program that promotes the collaboration of parents, educators and community to improve social, emotional and academic outcomes for children.

Dr. James J. Duderstadt - Duderstadt is president emeritus of the University of Michigan and professor of nuclear engineering and radiological sciences. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a recipient of the National Medal of Technology for exemplary service to the nation. He is director of the university's Millennium Project, a "laboratory where paradigms of learning institutions can be designed, constructed and studied." He was also a member of the blue-ribbon advisory panel, "Commission on the Future of NC State."

Lee Smith - Smith is a nationally recognized author and former NC State faculty member. Considered one of the foremost authors of the South and the nation, Smith has written 13 books, including "Fair and Tender Ladies," and is the recipient of numerous book awards. She was an assistant, associate and professor of English at NC State from 1989 to 1998.

Dr. Charles M. Vest - President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and professor of mechanical engineering, Vest is the former provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and dean of engineering at the University of Michigan. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow in both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. His research interests include the areas of heat transfer, fluid mechanics and optics.
