Newswise — Graduates of the University of North Carolina Wilmington received a different flavor of "real world" advice during their May commencement, courtesy of a harmonica and a know-it-all Southern lady.

Nationally renowned author Clyde Edgerton used his tale-spinning skills to encourage graduates to take ownership of their future with advice from his "Cousin Cindy," a musical rendition reflecting on the challenges of college life and the "four lessons of life in three minutes." His speech can be viewed at http://qtss.uncw.edu/edgerton09.mov.

Edgerton, professor of creative writing at UNC Wilmington, is the author of seven bestsellers, including the recent critical hit The Bible Salesman and five novels which have been featured as New York Times Notable Books. Edgerton told graduates that they are responsible for the stories of their future and offered these words wisdom for life:1. Do what you want to (make your own stories)2. Listen to old people (learn from the stories of others)3. Talk to children (share your stories)4. There is no occasion too joyful, too sad, too serious for the blues

His last lesson, complete with a live harmonica solo, earned a standing ovation.
