SINGLE DAY UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENTCEREMONIES PLANNED SUNDAY, JUNE 17, AT UCSD

For the first time in recent history, the University of California, San Diego will hold an all-campus commencement ceremony and graduation rites for its five undergraduate colleges on a single day-Sunday, June 17. Programs for two graduate divisions will be held the preceding day, June 16, while the UCSD School of Medicine will hold its commencement June 3.

More than 35,500 family members and friends are expected to attend the various rites for some 3,700 graduates.

The all-campus commencement will be held at 12:30 p.m. June 17 on the North Campus Recreation Field (RIMAC) with Patch Adams, M.D., founder and director of the nonprofit Gesundheit! Institute, scheduled as guest speaker. Adams and his work with pediatric patients were enacted by Robin Williams in a 1998 film, "Patch Adams."

The mid-day ceremony will be preceded by three undergraduate commencements. Muir College will hold its ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on the North Campus Recreation Field, with student speakers scheduled to address some 7,000 guests. At the same time, Thurgood Marshall College will hold its commencement on the Thurgood Marshall Field. Meanwhile, Eleanor Roosevelt College will hold its graduation at 9 a.m. in the RIMAC Arena.

Following the all-campus program, Revelle College will hold its ceremony at 3 p.m. on the Thurgood Marshall Field, with Neil and Judith Morgan, authors of a biography of Roger Revelle, scheduled as commencement speakers. At the same time, Warren College will welcome some 8,500 guests for graduation ceremonies on the North Campus Recreation Field.

The preceding day, June 16, the Graduate Division and Teacher Education Program will hold joint ceremonies at 9 a.m. in the RIMAC Arena, and the International Relations/Pacific Studies Graduate School has scheduled its ceremony at 11 a.m. in Robinson Plaza.

Kenneth Shine, M.D., president of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, and immediate past dean of the UCLA School of Medicine, will address 118 graduates of the UCSD School of Medicine and their guests at an 11 a.m. ceremony June 3 on the East Lawn of the School of Medicine.

Parking for families of the graduates will be free on June 3, 16 and 17. Shuttle service will be provided on June 17 from the East Campus parking lots.
