Newswise — The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) announces that the first-ever SWHR Dr. Estelle Ramey Award for Women’s Health Leadership will be presented to Marsha B. Henderson, assistant commissioner for women’s health with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Henderson will be honored during the Annual SWHR Gala Dinner on Wednesday, April 2, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. For more details, visit SWHR.org.
The award is named for Dr. Estelle Ramey, a prominent public figure and widely respected scientist who was an endocrinologist and professor of physiology and biophysics at Georgetown University. She was one of the first researchers to call for investigation into the biological differences between men and women and how those differences affect health and disease. This award will honor others like Dr. Ramey who have a history of leadership and advocacy in women’s health.
Marsha Henderson leads women’s health research and outreach activities across the FDA where she oversees the Office of Women’s Health. She is responsible for directing and coordinating FDA policy, research and public communications to protect and advance the health of women.
Additionally, she has been a leading advocate for the participation of women in clinical trials and for sex, gender and subpopulation analyses. Henderson developed the award-winning “Take Time to Care” initiative, building a network of national organizations to work collaboratively to share FDA information with consumers, scientists and health professionals.
Henderson has served the U.S. government for more than 25 years, with 14 of them at the FDA. Prior to joining the FDA, she held several positions at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) including director of placement for the National Health Service Corps and chief of analysis and information for the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health. She also served as senior advisor to the director of the Women's Bureau at the Department of Labor and director of monitoring and evaluation for the Interagency Council on the Homeless at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
