Newswise — CHICAGO, March 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Provocative and practice-changing research in the field of gynecologic cancers will be presented at The Annual Meeting on Women's Cancer — conducted by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO), to be held March 24-27, 2012, at the Austin Convention Center, Austin, TX. Over 400 studies will be presented at the meeting.

Some key highlights are listed below:

Featured Abstract #1: (Embargoed for coverage until presentation on March 27, 2012) The SGO 2012 Presidential Outstanding Abstract Award will be presented for "Disparities in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer According to Race and Socioeconomic Status: Adherence to National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines and Survival Outcome a Study of 47,160 Patients from the National Cancer Data Base" by Robert E. Bristow, MD, University of California - Irvine Medical Center, et. al.

In this study, analysis of outcomes for 47,160 women treated for ovarian cancer between 1998 and 2002 found that race and socioeconomic factors, including insurance status and household income, correlated with poorer outcome as demonstrated by decreased five-year-survival rates for certain groups of women. This study focuses on the important issue of disparities in health care. Fewer than half of all women in the study received treatment that adhered to National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, a set of guidelines developed by an alliance of the world's leading cancer centers that make treatment recommendations based on the best evidence available. African American patients and women who were on Medicare or not insured, regardless of race, were less likely to receive NCCN-adherent care.

Late-Breaking Abstract #2: (Embargoed for coverage until presentation on March 25, 2012)

A second noteworthy abstract is "Randomized Phase III Noninferiority Trial of First Line Chemotherapy for Metastatic or Recurrent Endometrial Carcinoma: A Gynecologic Oncology Group Study" David Scott Miller, M.D., University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, et. al.

This phase III trial, conducted by the Gynecologic Oncology Group, enrolled 1,341 women and demonstrates that a less toxic two-drug regimen is not less effective than a standard three-drug regimen. Included in this study is an important quality of life component that demonstrated less toxicity with the two-drug regimen when compared to the two-drug regimen.
