“Citation Award winners are selected for their leadership and contributions in the areas of research and scholarship, clinical care, administrative services or educational services,” said Liz Joy, president of ACSM. “We’re happy to recognize Dr. Bloomfield’s tremendous accomplishments.”
Dr. Bloomfield is a professor of health and kinesiology at Texas A&M University where she also serves as assistant provost for graduate and professional studies. She received her Ph.D. in exercise physiology from The Ohio State University in 1992 after completing a M.A. from The University of Iowa and a B.A. from Oberlin College.
Professor Bloomfield’s research has focused for the last 25 years on the mechanisms behind bone loss due to disuse and how to mitigate the deleterious impact of microgravity and inactivity on skeletal integrity and the role of nutrition for modifying these effects. Dr. Bloomfield’s work has been funded by approximately $10 million over two decades, largely by NASA, to identify countermeasures against the rapid loss of cancellous bone with simulated microgravity. Her university teaching has won awards, and she has mentored more than 20 graduate student dissertations and theses.
