TEMPLE UNIVERSITY'S 114TH COMMENCEMENT MIXES POMP, CIRCUMSTANCE AND STUDENT SUCCESS

ð A graphic design major who worked his way through Temple's Tyler School of Art by driving the Zamboni machine that smooths the ice at Philadelphia Flyers games...

ð A broadcast journalism major who's made the "final four" on Fox TV's reality show, "Boot Camp"...

ð An electrical and computer engineering major, legally blind since birth and deaf since age 19, who designed and created a "palm Braille" device the size of a tissue box to help those with vision and hearing disabilities who can't read braille because of sensory difficulties, paralysis or muscle atrophy...

ð A 'Temple and the three Baers' story: mom Dorothy receives her Ph.D. in English, son Aaron, his bachelor's in English and son Josh, his law degree...

ð An occupational therapist getting her master's degree who used a class project to create a resource guide for parents of disabled kids that's being distributed by the Mayor's Commission on People with Disabilities...

ð A master's of music candidate who won a position as a percussionist with The Philadelphia Orchestra while pursuing her degree and was a cover story in The Inquirer Sunday Magazine...

ð A summa cum laude physics major who will intern at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, with plans for grad school...

ð What's next for one of the first to get a master's from Temple's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management? He's working at Disney World.

These are just some of the 5,657 members of the Class of 2001 who are eligible to march down the aisle and receive their degrees at Temple University's 114th Commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 17.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., at The Liacouras Center, 1776 N. Broad St., on the Main Campus.

It will also be a "first" for Dr. David Adamany, the University's eighth president, who assumed the post as Temple's chief executive last August.

In the Temple tradition, Commencement will be a family affair, with Acting Provost Corrinne C. Caldwell delivering the President's "Salute to the Graduates," recognizing the achievements and contributions of outstanding members of the graduating class.

Alumnus/trustee Bill Cosby will assist in the conferring of the degrees and offer his own inimitable words of advice to members of the Class of 2001.

Speaking on behalf of his classmates is Travis Scott, a summa cum laude art history major from York, Pa., who will work on an archaeological dig this summer before joining Americorps in September.
