Newswise — Dr. Andrew G. Lee, a neuro-ophthalmologist specializing in the evaluation of optic nerve disorders, joins The Methodist Hospital as the new chair of ophthalmology.

Dr. Lee previously worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he served as professor of ophthalmology, neurology, and neurosurgery; associate program director of ophthalmology; and director of new educational initiatives in the graduate medical education office at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Lee's clinical and research interests focus primarily on optic nerve disorders including optic nerve tumors; optic nerve inflammation (optic neuritis); and swelling of the optic nerve (papilledema), particularly related to the "false brain tumor" syndrome (pseudotumor cerebri).

He has published more than 260 peer reviewed articles, 40 book chapters, and three full textbooks in ophthalmology. Lee serves on the editorial board of 12 journals, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, and Eye. He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Honor Award, the AAO Secretariat Award, and the AAO Senior Achievement Award.

Dr. Lee is a graduate of the University of Virginia undergraduate school and the School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Cullen Eye Institute and was the chief resident in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in 1993. Following residency, he completed a clinical fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute and was a post-doctoral Fight for Sight fellow at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
