Newswise — Recital of the pledge of allegiance in schools is often at the forefront of debate over religion's place in public life. Samuel Fleischacker, UIC professor of philosophy, argues that the meaning of religion has changed since America was established, and full expression of the First Amendment today would lead to removing the word 'God' from the pledge (and eliminating Christmas as a state holiday). Several of the country's founders -- James Madison especially -- would probably have welcomed a corresponding change in the interpretation of the First Amendment, adds Fleischacker, who can also comment on issues related to teaching creationism.
