Training Nurses to Teach

Not only is there a shortage of nurses, there is also a nationwide shortage of academic faculty to teach nursing students.

"Faculty shortages are an issue in general for higher education," says Carol Dashiff, Ph.D., an expert in nursing education. "Retirements are part of it, but there is also much opportunity in the workplace that draws nurses to other settings."

To help stem the shortage, UAB has introduced a Ph.D. program for nurses, the first of its kind in Alabama.

"We want to identify Ph.D. candidates early who have a career interest in academia and foster that career goal." The program also will train nurses for careers in scientific research.
