UNCW added seven more students to its total enrollment on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The students were accepted at UNCW after evacuating their schools because of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

Five students join us from Tulane University: Alex Olson, Matt Brissette, Princess Rowe-Bodani, Mike Cummings and Jeff Collins. Jessica Zwan and Rafael Riera join us from the University of New Orleans.

Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo welcomed the students Tuesday afternoon and remarked, "The entire higher education community has mobilized on this situation."

The UNCW Department of Social Work faculty, the Social Work Student Organization, Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society and UNCW GlobalServe have adoped a shelter in Louisiana.

Dr. Debra Desselle, a former member of the UNCW faculty, serves as a volunteer in the shelter in Pineville, LA. She is accepting the following items: Toiletries, over-the-counter medical supplies, baby supplies, soft blankets and throws, sweaters and warm clothing for the elderly; and shoes of all sizes. UNCW Faculty Members Willing to Speak

Lawrence B. Cahoon, professor of biology and marine biology - resource person on water quality issues

Gregg Snedden - visiting research assistant professor of marine science, is from Louisiana and has worked in the marshes

Stan Harts - director of environmental and health safety and Suzanne Blake emergency management coordinator " both have experience in hurricane preparedness and hosted the disaster resistant university conference this summer. They were instrumental in securing $100,000 in grants from FEMA to make UNCW a disaster resistant university. The university has made a conscious effort to incorporate disaster resistance into university planning, policy, and procedures. Blake has been in contact with the director of the EH&S department at LSU, which is currently being used as a staging area for recovery resources and a haven for evacuated students and families from affected universities.

Len Lecci, Ph.D. in psychology has done hurricane victim counseling in the past and is planning to travel to Louisiana in December to do counseling.

Frederick Bingham, Ph.D., associate professor of physics & oceanography, does work with the oceanic response, storm surges

Deb Bowen, MSW, LCSW wrote a book on grief and disaster

Sharon Boyd " associate vice chancellor for business services is the head of the UNCW emergency operations group.
