Newswise — March 15, 2011 – Warrendale, PA (USA) – The University of Utah prevailed over Missouri Science & Technology to capture the trophy in the TMS 2011 Materials Bowl science knowledge competition held recently at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) 140th Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Diego, California.

The game show-styled knowledge contest pitted students from 15 universities in four eliminations rounds and two semifinals to determine the championship contenders. Students answered both individual and team questions based on the diverse areas of materials science and engineering. This was the fifth year for the TMS Materials Bowl competition.

The University of Utah team, nicknamed the “MagMets,” consisted of Brent Randall, captain, Neal Hardin, Meenakshisundaram Ramanathan, and Biswadeep Saha. Members of the second place Missouri Science & Technology team, nicknamed “Miner Mayhem,” were: Scott Pisarik, captain, Andrea Els, Andrew Merritt and Chris Ferguson.

The winning team received a $500 donation for its Material Advantage student chapter, $200 for each team member, and the honor of keeping the Materials Bowl trophy on campus for a year.

University of Utah professor Sivaraman Guruswamy, faculty advisor for the Material Advantage chapter, said his team gained not only a victory, but a valuable learning experience.”

“We are very proud of our team’s accomplishment as they prepared and competed well with talented teams from our sister universities,” he said. “We thank TMS for providing the students this wonderful learning experience while having lots of fun and making friendships.” In addition to the University of Utah and Missouri Science and Technology, the other 13 teams in the competition included: California Polytechnic State University. Washington State University, Boise State University, University of British Columbia, University of Idaho, New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, Colorado School of Mines, Florida International University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Ohio State University and the University of Florida.
