New York Sea Grant and Seaway Trail, Inc. have announced the availability of the free 2003 edition of their CrossBorder Travel Tips brochure, with several new features, at http://www.seawaytrail.com.

"The Sea Grant/Seaway Trail border crossing tips brochure is a valuable tool to visitors and residents alike," U.S. Representative John M. McHugh (R-NY) said. "I will be working with my Canadian counterpart, Leeds-Grenville MP (Member of Parliament) Joe Jordan, to help get the word out to travelers about what is needed this season. It's nice to know we can point folks to the Seaway Trail website to easily access this information."

The 2003 edition of the Travel Tips brochure, prepared in cooperation with U.S. and Canadian government representatives, includes:

... the new NEXUS program for frequent cross-border motorists and for use by U.S. boaters,

... updated information on the types of identification to carry for persons and vehicles,

... the amount of goods one can bring back to the U.S,

... Seaway Trail ports that now have videophones (use of videophones is suspended during alerts of orange or higher)

... regulations for private vessels of 30 feet or longer,

... information on how to obtain New York and Canadian fishing licenses,

... information on traveling with pets, and

... how to check security status alerts.

"While cross-border travel is expected to run smoothly, we suggest those interested in traveling between Canada and New York visit the website to learn the up-to-date procedures," suggests NY Sea Grant's Great Lakes Program Coordinator Dave White.

"For example, American boaters may now use the new NEXUS program in lieu of an I-68 permit for boating when homeland security alerts are below orange. However, when the U.S. homeland security alert status is orange or higher, the small boat program will be temporarily suspended and all boats will be inspected, " says White.

"Whenever you are traveling calling ahead to check on event dates, overnight accommodation availability, access to your chosen port of call, and ferry schedules is always a good idea ," says Teresa Mitchell, executive director of Seaway Trail, Inc., Sackets Harbor.

A starting date for the 2003 season for Horne's Ferry, which crosses between Cape Vincent, NY, and Wolfe Island, Ontario, may be early May or mid-June. Bruce Horne suggests calling 613-385-2262 or 315-783-0638 or checking http://www.wolfeisland.com to learn when the ferry is running.
