EVENT: UA College of Medicine Celebrates 2003 Convocation

U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, is the keynote speaker at the convocation for the University of Arizona College of Medicine Class of 2003, Thursday, May 15, 6 p.m., in Centennial Hall on the UA Main Campus, Tucson.

Prior to being named Surgeon General, Dr. Carmona was UA professor of surgery, public health and family and community medicine; chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical System; and a surgeon and deputy sheriff with the Pima County Sheriff's Department. He received his master's in public health degree in Health Policy and Administration in 1998 from the Arizona College of Public Health (now the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health). He is former chief executive officer of the Pima County health care system and executive committee chair of Arizona's first Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), AZ-1. He has published extensively and received numerous awards, decorations, and local and national recognition for his achievements. In 1993, he was named Pima County Physician of the Year. Dr. Carmona's address is titled, "Perspective in Leadership in Medicine."

The College of Medicine also will present a Community Service Award to Phoenix Mayor Skip Rimsza, for facilitating the development of the AHSC Phoenix Campus.
