Newswise — For most of Friday and all of Saturday, Hurricane Irene dominated the media, both nationally, and locally, and it's left some people wondering if it was all hype.

Temple public health professor Sarah Bass, who specializes in risk communications, said that overall, she found the coverage to be well-done. She says: "I actually think the messages from leaders were quite good and probably helped keep fatalities down. While media coverage was excessive, the messages were consistent."

She adds that there were still over two dozen deaths and millions without power across the East Coast, so we didn't exactly escape unscathed.
