Newswise — Forty years ago this month, WFDU (FM) began broadcasting to the New York region and became a laboratory for students of Fairleigh Dickinson University to learn the art and craft of broadcasting.
To commemorate the inaugural broadcast in 1971, the station, located at 89.1 on the FM dial and available on the web at www.wfdu.fm, will air a retrospective of the station’s history beginning at Noon on Tuesday, August 30 - four decades to the day and hour of the first sign on. The broadcast, produced by Program Director Barry Sheffield, will highlight the work of scores of announcers throughout the years, while serving as an audio time capsule of popular music and trends from 1971 to today.
WFDU is hosting two free public events in November 2011 to celebrate the station’s history and will bring into focus the work of the University in developing global citizens who understand the interconnection of culture and economy worldwide. Wednesday, November 16 at 5 pm, College at Florham (Madison) A symposium will explore how the American public develops a worldview through the consumption of mainstream media. Dave Marash a veteran local and network television reporter .will appear. Marash was with Al Jazeera in Washington, D.C. and gained a unique perspective on the development and presentation of international news for English speaking audiences. Part of the presentation will include results of a poll taken by FDU’s PublicMind and presented by Poll Director Dr. Peter Woolley. The poll sampled how the public gets international news and how that informs a world view.
Saturday, November 19 at 5 pm, Metropolitan Campus (Teaneck/Hackensack)On November 19 on FDU’s Metropolitan Campus WFDU personalities will highlight the entertainment programming offered on the air by the station over the years. Each of the station’s formats: Blues, Bluegrass, Folk, Gospel, Alternative and others will be performed live for the enjoyment of station listeners and the general public. Attendees will be treated to light refreshments, the chance to win a commemorative t-shirt and the opportunity to meet and greet their favorite announcer in person.
