Newswise — William Small Jr., MD, FACRO, FACR, FASTRO, has been named chair of the Gynecological Cancer Intergroup (GCIG). GCIG is a leading international organization focused on gynecologic clinical trials with more than 25 member cooperative oncology groups throughout the world.

Dr. Small will lead the organization’s efforts to conduct and promote high quality clinical trials to improve outcomes for women with gynecologic cancer. Under his direction, the group also will perform studies in rare tumors, encourage evidence-based medicine and support educational activities.

GCIG members are gathering this week in Melbourne, Australia, for the organization’s semi-annual meeting. They will discuss the latest in gynecologic clinical trials and share ideas for the future of gynecologic cancer research.

Dr. Small is chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Loyola University Health System. Prior to that, he was vice chair of Radiation Oncology at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, where he also went to medical school and completed his residency.

Dr. Small specializes in gynecologic, gastrointestinal and breast cancers. He is co-chair of the National Cancer Institute-funded NRG Oncology Gynecological Committee and serves on various NCI task forces.

Dr. Small was awarded fellowships in the American College of Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology and the American Society for Radiation Oncology. He is the former president of the Council of Affiliated Regional Radiation Oncology Societies and the Chicago Radiological Society and is the immediate past chair of the Gynecological Cancer Intergroup Cervix Committee.
