Newswise — Philadelphia – Wills Eye Hospital has earned a top national ranking for the 31st consecutive year on U.S. News & World Report’s Annual Best Hospital’s Survey. The vote by America’s Ophthalmologists is based on hospital reputation. Physicians were asked where they would refer their patients who have the most complex disorders. Wills Eye Hospital, established in 1832 as the nation’s first hospital specializing exclusively in eye care, is a global leader in ophthalmology, and has also been voted #1 in the nation for its outstanding academic residency training program – again, chosen by physicians.
“We are tremendously proud of our entire faculty and staff – especially during this most turbulent and challenging year in healthcare. The top-tier national ranking is a humbling and gratifying vote of confidence by our colleagues from around the country who trust and look to us as their ever reliable resource and collaborator in care,” said Julia A. Haller, MD, Ophthalmologist-in-Chief, William Tasman, MD, Endowed Chair, Wills Eye Hospital; Professor and Chair, Ophthalmology, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University.
“Our pillars of education, training and research are well known in the field of ophthalmology and attract the best and brightest physicians. This ranking reflects the continuity of care Wills Eye has always provided. As patients explore where they need to go for expert eye care, it’s valuable to have a resource helping them understand the options available,” said Joseph P. Bilson, Chief Executive Officer, Wills Eye Hospital.
Within the last year, Wills Eye has opened its new state-of-the-art, Measey Ophthalmic Surgical Training laboratory, (the MOST Lab) the J. Arch McNamara, MD., Center for Ophthalmic Education. Wills Eye delivered sight and life-saving care to more than 300,000 patients from all over the world, led or has been involved in cutting edge clinical trials, published hundreds of articles in high impact peer-reviewed journals and has live streamed thousands of hours of medical education (including the famed chiefs rounds) where attendees throughout the world learn from Wills Eye thought leaders. Wills Eye continues to expand its faculty with the latest announcement of Jose S. Pulido, MD, MS, MBA, MPH, joining the Vickie and Jack Farber Vision Research Center at Wills Eye in the coming year. Dr. Pulido, a world-renowned vision researcher and clinician will hold the Larry A. Donoso Endowed Chair and assume the role of Director of the Henry and Corrine Bower Memorial Laboratories for Translational Research.
Wills Eye, which follows guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state requirements, has continually provided emergency and urgent care throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
