Newswise — Robert Gravani is a professor of food science whose academic research and fieldwork includes production agriculture, food processing, regulatory training and consumer protection. He comments on the Food and Drug Administration’s report that inspectors found unclean conditions at an Indiana farm linked to salmonella-tainted cantaloupe that caused 270 people to get sick in 26 states.

Gravani says:

“With concerns about produce safety, growers need to develop and implement farm food safety plans to reduce microbial hazards and risks in the growing, harvesting and packing of fresh fruits and vegetables.

“One key area of focus is the design, cleanliness and sanitation of the packing house where products are washed, graded and packed.”
