American Chemical Society National Meeting Features Presidential Events


Newswise — WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2016 — American Chemical Society (ACS) President Donna J. Nelson, Ph.D., will emphasize her theme of build­ing communities in chemistry at the ACS 252nd National Meeting & Exposition, August 21 to 25, in Philadelphia. The presidential events, which will also include other subjects of broad interest, will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and the Philadelphia Marriott. All times listed are in EDT.

Four presidential events will high­light the role of chemistry in inter­national partnerships and collaborations around the world. The first event is a symposium called “Chemical Sciences & Human Rights” that will take place on Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon in Room 201 B in the convention center.

This will be followed by a two-day symposium, “Chemistry in the U.S. & China: Current & Future States of Shared Scientific Interests & Opportunities for Cooperation,” that will take place on Sunday from 1:20 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Both of these sessions will be held in Liberty Salon C in the Philadelphia Marriott.

A poster session related to global activities titled, “Building Inter­national Communities,” will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Philadelphia Marriott, Independence I and II.

Rounding out the international theme, on Monday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Nelson will host a symposium on “Broadening Participation in Global Chemistry Expe­riences: Why Engaging Diverse Chem­istry Communities in Global Research is Critical.” It will be held in Liberty Salon A in the Philadelphia Marriott.

On Sunday morn­ing from 10:30 a.m. to 12:05 p.m., a symposium will be held in Room 201 C in the convention center to honor the 2016 Cita­tion for Chemical Breakthrough Awards. These awards were developed in 2006 by the Division of the History of Chemistry to recognize “breakthrough publications, books and patents worldwide in the fields of science embraced by the ACS.”

A timely symposium, “Fracking: Economics vs. Environment,” will be held Monday from 8 a.m. to noon in Liberty Salon A in the Philadelphia Marriott. Several ACS symposia have tackled the science and environmental implications of hydraulic fracturing, and President Nelson looks to continue the discussion of these important issues at this symposium.

Also on Monday, a symposium covering “NSF Opportunities” will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Liberty Salon C in the Philadelphia Marriott.

Finally, as part of the meeting theme, and to celebrate the host city of Philadel­phia, Nelson has organized an all-day symposium on Tuesday titled, “Chemical Business of the People, by the People, for the People.” It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Independence I and II in the Philadelphia Marriott.
