Newswise — New Brunswick, NJ – The Rutgers School of Public Health and Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research are excited to announce that Elissa Kozlov, PhD, has joined their faculty this past May. She joined the School of Public Health’s department of health behavior, society, and policy as an instructor, and is a resident faculty member at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research.

As a clinical psychologist, Kozlov is both a clinician and researcher with expertise in managing depression, anxiety, insomnia, bereavement, difficulties adjusting to new life circumstances, stress related to caregiving, and the behavioral management of pain.

Kozlov’s research focuses on expanding access to high quality mental health care for older adults and adults with serious illness and their families. She has complementary interests in improving access to palliative care by studying patient barriers, such as knowledge deficits and stigma.

“The School of Public Health is excited to add Dr. Kozlov to its rapidly growing faculty,” said Perry N. Halkitis, PhD, MS, MPH, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health. “Dr. Kozlov’s work both as a clinician and researcher brings a unique perspective to the University and we look forward to the cross-institutional collaboration with the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research.”

“We are delighted that Dr. Kozlov has joined both the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research and the School of Public Health,” says XinQi Dong, MD, MPH, director of Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research and Henry Rutgers distinguished professor of population health science. “She is poised to be an independent investigator contributing to palliative care research in diverse populations. In a short period of time, she has already demonstrated great potential and was recently awarded the competitive KL2 grant from the Rutgers CTSA.”

“Our department is thrilled to add a clinician and researcher to our ranks,” said Paul Duberstein, PhD, chair of the department of health behavior, society, and policy. “Given the “graying” of the population, Dr. Kozlov’s expertise in clinical geropsychology is critically needed as we train the next generation of public health clinicians, advocates, and researchers.”

Kozlov has a PhD in psychology from Washington University in St. Louis, and a BA in psychology and theatre from Wesleyan University. She joined Rutgers from Weill Cornell Medicine, where she was an instructor of psychology in medicine and a T32 Post-Doctoral fellow in behavioral geriatrics. Kozlov is also a New York State licensed psychologist.

“I am thrilled to join the Rutgers community,” said Kozlov. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues and students.”
