Newswise — In Houghton, Michigan—the birthplace of professional hockey in the United States—summer hockey is an age-old tradition that shows no signs of flagging.

Summer can take forever to arrive in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but when it finally gets hot outside, summer hockey camp at Michigan Technological University is a cool alternative for hockey players from 8 to 18 years old.

Hockey camp has been offered at Michigan Tech for nearly 40 years. It attracts some 700 players each year, from as far away as California, Florida, Texas, Colorado and Alaska.

The John MacInnes Student Ice Arena offer a nice respite on a hot day, and Michigan Tech's summer hockey camp provides some pretty cool instruction.

"Our camp has the players on the ice three times a day for five days, in addition to off-ice training, videos, and lectures," says camp manager Chris Roy. "We give the hockey player a well-rounded week of instruction in a fun environment. We give them a lot of material to digest in a short period of time, but if they take a few things home for their next season, we feel that we have succeeded in giving them a good camp experience."

"They also experience the campus and residence hall living," he says, "and we've had a number of hockey school participants enroll at Michigan Tech."
