Newswise — Chicago, Illinois—The American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) is pleased to announce Bill McCarberg, MD as the Academy’s 31st President. Dr. McCarberg assumes his new position on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at AAPM’s Annual Meeting in National Harbor, MD, where more than 1,000 scientists, physicians and key nonphysician providers convene to discuss and learn the latest in Pain Medicine.

Prior to his presidency, Dr. McCarberg served as AAPM’s President-Elect. He is an assistant adjunct clinical professor at the University of California in San Diego and practices at both Neighborhood Healthcare and Elizabeth Hospice in Escondido, CA. “I am a family physician by training and interest. Primary care providers are the first contact for most pain patients and require help in dealing with these often complex patients,” says Dr. McCarberg. “I hope to improve the understanding and communication between the first contact providers and the pain experts. Everyone benefits with better knowledge and interdisciplinary care.”

Founder of the Chronic Pain Management Program at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, CA, Dr. McCarberg received his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL and completed his internship and residency in family medicine at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY. He is currently an adjunct assistant clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego.

“I am honored to have been chosen to lead such a fine organization,” says Dr. McCarberg, who is enthusiastic about the wonderful mix of skills, and interests the AAPM Board of Directors shares. “I plan to work hard to maintain the AAPM's role as the leading association for pain medicine doctors.”
