The "Discovery to Recovery: A Path to Healthy Minds" conference on Apr. 30, 2013 in Los Angeles and the Foundation's free, monthly "Meet the Scientist" webinars feature leading experts in mental health research. The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation has invested nearly $300 million in NARSAD Grants to more than 3,300 scientists worldwide since 1987, leading to thousands of scientific achievements to improve the lives of those with mental illness. Manji, M.D., is the Global Therapeutic Head of Neuroscience for Johnson and Johnson (J&J) Pharmaceutical Research and Development and Adjunct Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Duke University School of Medicine. Before joining J&J, Dr. Manji was Chief, Laboratory of Molecular Pathophysiology & Experimental Therapeutics at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the largest program of its kind in the world. Dr. Manji is a Brain & Behavior Research Foundation Scientific Council Member, NARSAD Independent Investigator Grantee, and 1999 Falcone Prizewinner for Outstanding Achievement in Affective Disorders Research (re-named the Colvin Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Mood Disorders Research in 2012).
Dr. Manji leads a preclinical and clinical global team whose broad goal is to discover and develop new therapeutics for major neurologic, psychiatric and pain-related diseases with a high unmet need for effective treatments. His research has helped to conceptualize severe neuropsychiatric disorders as genetically-influenced disorders of synaptic and neural plasticity, and led to the investigation of key novel therapeutics. The major focus of his research has been the investigation of disease- and treatment-induced changes in gene and protein networks that regulate synaptic and neural plasticity in brain and behavior disorders.

MAY 2013"Meet the Scientist Webinar: OCD & Anxiety - Symptoms, Treatment & How to Cope with Dr. Helen Blair Simpson"Date & Time: Tuesday, May 14, 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. EDTRegistration & Information: For information or to register for free, go to http://bbrfoundation.org/webinarPresenter: Since 1996, Helen Blair Simpson, M.D., Ph.D., has worked in the New York State Psychiatric Institute’s Anxiety Disorders Clinic, first as a NIMH Research Fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Liebowitz and now as an independent researcher and Director of the OCD Research Program. She is a Brain & Behavior Research Foundation 2010 NARSAD Independent Investigator Grantee. Her interdisciplinary work ranges from clinical trials comparing the effects of medication and therapy in OCD to brain imaging studies examining the brain basis of OCD. The goal of her work is to improve the outcome of patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Dr. Simpson is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, College of Physician and Surgeons at Columbia University and Attending Psychiatrist, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. She holds a BS in Biology from Yale College. Her studies in the M.D.-Ph.D. program at The Rockefeller University/Cornell University Medical College included work on the brain basis of bird song vocalizations as a member of the lab of Dr. Fernando Nottebohm. After completing the M.D.-Ph.D. program, she completed an internship and residency in psychiatry at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
