In an effort to develop a stronger connection between skills needed in the job market and education programs, the Florida legislature created a performance incentive for colleges to increase the number of certifications and licensures earned by students. The certifications are approved third-party tests which show individuals trained in specific high-demand industries meet or exceed the established industry standard.
“Broward College has a strong relationship with its business community, and works closely with industry leaders to create opportunities for synergy between programs and job opportunities,” said Mildred Coyne, executive director for Workforce Education and Economic Development. “Often, we find certifications are the best avenue to produce highly-skilled, job-ready graduates who meet the needs of employers in the community.”
There are over 200 postsecondary industry certifications in high-demand industries. The success of Broward College in identifying opportunities to promote certifications to its students directly addresses critical local and statewide economic needs for current and emerging industries. Some of the specialized certifications earned by students include aircraft airframe mechanics, massage therapy, pharmacy technician, dental assisting.
In the coming years Broward College anticipates growth in industry certification attainment in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, and continued high-demand for licenses in nursing and health sciences . The College recently recommended the state include an additional 47 certifications to the list of industry certifications.
