A Clear and Convincing Body of Science Exists That Underscores the role of NO and Health
Bryan will tell a session sponsored by the by The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), “The scientific record is clear, without proper production of nitric oxide, our bodies cannot and will not heal. Loss of nitric oxide is considered the earliest event in the onset and progression of chronic disease, including cardiovascular disease, the number 1 killer of men and women worldwide. The fact that cardiovascular disease remains the top killer of men and women is unacceptable given the fact that loss of nitric oxide is recognized as the mechanism of action of heart disease. Therapeutic and dietary strategies to restore NO will have a profound impact on public health and the health care industry.
“For those interested in experimental therapeutic applications regarding NO there are two essential learnings: First, the effort to develop a safe and effective nitric oxide therapies has been largely unsuccessful thus far. Second, the discovery that natural product chemistry can generate NO gas in the oral cavity has proven safe and effective at restoring NO production in humans is very exciting and it is an important step forward for the scientific community, which may provide the basis for therapeutic platforms for other gaseous molecules.”
Relationships between producing NO in the mouth and Controlling Blood Pressure Have Been Established.
In a second talk focusing on the relationships between oral microbiome and hypertension he said, “Two out of three people in the US have elevated blood pressure. Over half of those on prescription medication do not have adequate control of their blood pressure. It is important to understand that the oral microbiome provides about half the body's nitric oxide production and plays a key role in the regulation of blood pressure.
“Ironically, one of the first thing millions of Americans do each morning is to reach for an antiseptic mouthwash. Indeed, that does an excellent job of killing the ‘bad breath’ bacteria in the mouth; however, an important unintended consequence takes place – the antiseptic mouthwash also kills the ‘good NO producing bacteria’ in the mouth. The scientific community needs to do a better job of communicating these findings to healthcare providers and health driven consumers.”
Dr. Bryan is credited with a multitude of significant discoveries in Nitric Oxide function, production and metabolism, and has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals in the field. He’s an inventor who has been awarded more than a dozen US and International patents related to his discoveries on Nitric Oxide. Dr. Bryan is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics and has authored or edited 6 books on nitric oxide.
