Dr. Farber Leads Oncology Research Network Development and Dr. Scola Directs Atlantic Thrombosis Center
Newswise — February 7, 2019, Morristown, NJ – Leading hematologist/oncologists Charles M. Farber, MD, PhD and Michael Anthony Scola, MD have joined Atlantic Hematology Oncology, part of Atlantic Health System Cancer Care. Both physicians are long-time members of the Morristown Medical Center cancer care community.
“Both Dr. Farber and Dr. Scola are outstanding clinicians as well as leaders in their subspecialties,” said Eric D. Whitman, MD, medical director, Atlantic Health System Cancer Care. “They are ideal candidates to lead these new initiatives, which will provide highly specialized care to our patients as well as increased access to breakthrough treatments and clinical trials.”
Dr. Farber became an attending physician at Morristown Medical Center in 1995 and served as chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the hospital’s Carol G. Simon Cancer Center from 2007-2011. Dr. Scola joined the staff at Morristown in 2002. Both physicians spent two years at Summit Medical Group – MD Anderson Cancer Center before joining Atlantic Hematology Oncology.

Dr. Farber will continue as a general oncologist with a concentration in malignant hematology and will serve as medical director of Oncology Research Network Development for Atlantic Health System, of which the Breakthrough Oncology Accelerator (BOA) is a key component. The BOA is a new partnership with Atlantic Health System, Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and OriginCV to expand and improve access to cancer research and treatments.

Dr. Scola, who maintains a broad-based clinical practice with a focus on hematology, has been appointed director of the Atlantic Thrombosis Center – a new multidisciplinary program to investigate and optimize clinical care of blood clotting risk, events, and disorders. A key feature of this Center will be its collaborative work with expert physicians at Morristown Medical Center.
“The opportunity to start the Atlantic Thrombosis Center is the culmination of my longstanding interests in blood clotting and its complications,” said Dr. Scola. “There is a great need to provide leading edge care for patients with clotting disorders, and this new center will enable us to dedicate time and resources to providing optimal treatment.”

Background on Dr. Farber
Dr. Charles Farber is an internist, fellowship-trained in hematology/oncology. He has extensive, ongoing experience with cancer research and clinical trials, especially blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplasia.
He previously served as chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Morristown Medical Center, and has held academic and clinical appointments with the University of Rochester, Cornell University Medical College, Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Rutgers University, The New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Farber earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) and his Master of Science from New York University. He completed his medical degree at the NYU School of Medicine and his PhD at the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. His internship, residency and subspecialty fellowship in hematology-oncology were all completed at The New York Hospital, where he was named chief fellow. Dr. Farber has served a lead or co-author on more than 80 scientific papers, presentations and abstracts. He has been named recipient of more than 50 awards and other honors, having been recognized by independent organizations, his peers and his patients, and has held volunteer leadership positions with such organizations at the Cure for Lymphoma Foundation and Oncology Society of New Jersey.
Dr. Farber is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, New Jersey Oncology Society and Morris County Medical Society. He currently chairs Morristown Medical Center’s Transfusion Committee and co-chairs the Cancer Subcommittee’s Adolescent & Young Adult Panel.
Background on Dr. Scola
Dr. Michael Scola is also an internist with fellowship training in hematology/oncology. For the past 20 years, Dr. Scola has maintained a broad-based clinical practice, with a focus on benign and malignant hematology.
Dr. Scola is regarded by patients and colleagues as a skilled and compassionate physician. His postdoctoral training includes a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Boston University Medical Center, where he received the Outstanding Fellow award and received the Chiefs’ Hematology Award for clinical excellence. Dr. Scola received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
A teacher, mentor and avid learner, Dr. Scola previously served many years as course director of pathophysiology at Northeastern University in Boston and is actively involved in instructing residents at Morristown Medical Center. He is also involved in clinical research, has worked with industry as a consultant, lecturer and advisor and has authored articles and book chapters. Dr. Scola’s education includes a year spent abroad in Florence, Italy and an intensive post-training program in clinical research at the Harvard School of Public Health. He serves on the boards of the Cancer Hope Network, and the Cancer Support Community of Central New Jersey. Dr. Scola is a member of American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.
