Ann Masten, director of the University of Minnesota's Institute of Child Development, is known internationally as one of the world's most influential researchers studying resilience in children at risk. She has found that certain protective factors, such as a sense of confidence and connections to adults, turn up all over the world in children who succeed, despite coming from troubled family situations.
