URI experts available for terrorism follow-up stories
KINGSTON, R.I. -- October 1, 2001 -- The following University of Rhode Island faculty and staff members are available to provide insight on a variety of topics related to the ongoing activities following the September 11 terrorist attacks. Terrorism and national security -- Marc Genest, associate professor of political science, is the author of Conflict and Cooperation: Evolving Theories of International Relations and taught American Foreign Policy and International Relations to naval personnel deployed in the South Pacific and Far East.
Biological warfare -- Wilfred Nelson, professor of chemistry, has worked with the military and served as a consultant on biological warfare
Explosives and forensic science -- Jimmie Oxley, associate professor of chemistry, collaborated with the FBI on simulations of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing
Post-traumatic stress -- James Campbell, director of the URI Counseling Center, has been to the site of the World Trade Center attacks twice to counsel victims and has studied the psychological effects of being held hostage
Stock market impact -- Henry Oppenheimer, associate professor of finance, is an expert on financial markets and investing
Economic impact -- Leonard Lardaro, professor of economics, compiles the Current Conditions Index and Job Improvement Index, which are respected indicators of the present state of the Rhode Island economy
Grief and bereavement -- Eugene Knott, associate professor of human development and family studies, is the former director of the URI Counseling Center and the author of a respected book about death and dying, Thanatopics.
Muslims/Islam -- Mohammed Sharif, professor of economics, is a local spokesman in the Muslim community
Crime investigations -- Dennis Hilliard is director of the Rhode Island State Crime Lab, located at the University of Rhode Island
Peace and nonviolence -- Bernard Lafayette, distinguished scholar in residence and director of the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, was a close colleague of Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Era
Women's rights in Middle East/Afghanistan -- Donna Hughes, professor of women's studies, conducts research on violence against women, sexual exploitation, and women's organized resistance to violence
