Newswise — The Institute of Food Technologists is a nonprofit scientific association with 20,000 professionals working in food science, food technology, and related professions in industry, academia, and government. IFT is offering two of its experts to discuss H1N1 Flu, the importance of hand washing during flu season, vaccine safety and distribution, and infection control.

Donald W. Schaffner, PhDSchaffner is a Food Science Professor and the Director of the Center for Advanced Food Technology at Rutgers University. Schaffner, a microbiologist, has worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Association (FAA) on the development of guidelines for risk characterization for microbiological hazards in food. He has also worked on the WHO Collaborating Centre for Risk Assessment of Pathogens in Food and Water.

Martha R. Roberts, PhDRoberts is a Microbiologist and Special Assistant to Director of the Florida Experiment Station and Dean for Research, University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. She is also a former Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Florida and Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture. Roberts received the FDA Commissioner’s Special Citation from FDA Commissioner McClellan in May 2003 for outstanding leadership and cooperative support of joint regulatory responsibilities in advancing food safety and enhancing the public health mandate. In addition, Roberts serves as a private consultant in food safety, government relations and agricultural environmental areas. Her expertise has garnered her many industry and national awards.
