Newswise — Washington, D.C., May 8, 2012—AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., issued the following statement today on the announcement of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Health Care Innovation awardees:
“We are gratified to see so many academic medical centers named as HHS Health Care Innovation awardees in the first round of this important program. The work being done at these institutions reflects the ways that medical schools and teaching hospitals are improving the health of the nation and training the next generation of health professionals to provide the most effective, efficient care.

These projects, ranging from the way care transitions are managed to the use of telehealth services and interprofessional teams, show how medical schools and teaching hospitals can improve health care by focusing on solutions to the complex problems of their communities. But this work will do more than improve the health of patients and change the way doctors practice medicine. These innovations also will result in savings of an estimated $121 million over three years, create new jobs, and retrain more than 3,500 health care workers with the skills needed to practice in a changing health system.

Like so many other academic medical centers that provide critical services in their communities, these awardees are using innovative, creative approaches to lead the way to better, more cost-effective health care delivery.”
